A new book on translation of Gulzar saab's selected poems by Noted Non fiction writer Pavan K. Varma (Present Director General of Indian Council of Cultural Raltions) was released on April 29th at New Delhi. The book features 44 peoms of Gulzar saab along with translations by Sh. Varma. On the release function, Gulzar saab mesmerized the audience with his rendering of a few poems, specifically his nazm on Pancham "yaad hai baarishon ke din"..

''My lyrics are influenced by my verses,' says the lyricist-poet, who prefers free-flowing verses to meter and rhyme. 'I don't think I can define my themes. But all my poems are about life and the way it affects and appeals to me"

Why Gulzar saab?, Sh. Varma has a reason, "When I happened to read them, I was convinced that the works need a much wider audience as compared to what it has now - primarily films"..

The 136 page Hardbound Book is released by Penguin in India.

After the fantastic Manzarnaama series of film scripts in Hindi, Gulzar saab has once again come up with a book on two of his most challenging scripts of the times of 80s. The title of the book is "Two Tales of My Times" which was released in the recent World Book Fair at New Delhi. The book published by Rupa & Co features the two hard hitting film scripts of Gulzar saab, New Delhi Times and Maachis. The translation of the scripts is done by Devina Dutt and the narrative of the book is in the form of a novel rather than dialogues.

"I have lived thru the catastrophic Partition and also experienced the times of Nehru, Gandhi and Azad who by personal example were able to inspire a surge of hope in newely independent India. I have observed and experienced as a common man, that the events that shaped the nations journey after that era, in the 70s and 80s. Both the stories related to that period."

On the 14th death anniversary of Pancham, Gulzar saab has presented his tribute in the form of a new book titled Qatrah Qatrah. The book features complete works of Gulzar and Pancham together.

The book was released on 4th January, 2008 by Hema Malini at a musical evening dedicated to Pancham da at Dinanath Mangeshkar Auditorium, Mumbai. Noted Singer and Music Director Bhupinder Singh who had a great rapport with Pancham da and Gulzar saab graced the evening and rendered soulful melodies of Gulzar-Pancham team. The highlight of the evening was Bhupinder ji's rendering of "Yaad hai Pancham, baarishon ke din", Gulzar saab's nazm on Pancham.

The book is compiled by Vishwas Nerurkar and Vishwanath Chaterjee and published by Gayatri Publications, Mumbai. The book features articles, interviews on the relationship of Gulzar and Pancham and the lyrics of all the songs that the duo did together including the unreleased ones like Devdas, bharosa and Abhi Abhi.

Gulzar saab has been teamed up with Illaiyaraja for a new under production film directed by debutant Ajoy Verma. The yet untitled film marks the coming together aof a great pair that gave us an unforgettable score in Sadma. Even after so many years and so many thousands of listenings, songs like Ae zindagi gale laga le and Surmai ankhiyon me nanha munna ik sapna deja re are as fresh as they were 25 years ago. After Sadma, Gulzar saab and Illaiyaraja shared the credits in Revathy's Mitr My Friend where Gulzar saab penned one song.

For this new film a few songs have already been recorded, one of them is "Mujhko itne se kaam pe rakh lo" rendered by Roop Kumar Rathore. (Remember last time Vishal made the same poem into a song in Boodhey Pahadon Par)

A new book on the life and works of gulzar saab has been published by Roopa & co. Penned by noted journalist Saibal Chaterjee, the book provides insight of film maker gulzar and takes a closer look at his creative journey in the film industry as a writer and director. Apart from the information on making of his films and critical evaluation of the work, the book also provide a handful of interesting trivia about gulzar saab's films.

Saibal Chaterjee earlier co authored an Encyclopedia on Bollywood with Gulzar saab.

Gulzar saab is writing lyrics for a forthcoming film titled "Yuvraj". A R Rahman is composing music for this Subhash Ghai venture. After the success of Guru, Gulzar-Rahman once again teamed up and a few songs have already been recorded. More details soon..

Sanjay Gupta's latest multi story-single flick venture "Dus Kahaniyaan" marks the comeback of Screenplay writer Gulzar for one of the ten stories, "Gubbare" directed by Sanjay Gupta, featuring Nana Patekar, Ronit Roy and Anita in the lead. Gulzar saab has penned the screen play and dialogs for this story of DusK.

Another significant and innovative contribution is in the form of Ten Poems representating Ten stories of the film. These ten poems are part of a special three disc music album of DusK, and have been recited by the actors from these stories including Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Dia Mirza, Sanjay Dutt, Amrita Singh, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpai. Though the rendition leaves a lot to be desired yet it is a noble and innovative aspect in film making and the film maker Sanjay Gupta deserves applauses for this effort.

Gulzar saab has conveyed a note of Thanks for all gulzar fans for sending him a bouquest of wishes on his 74th Birthday... He said he is delighted to receive all the messages and gifts. Though he was not happy with some of the messages specially the ones placing him along with ghalib in the same frame of wishes. He said "Ghalib sekoi tulna karataa hai to apne kaan pakad leta hoon, jabki mujhe pakadne uske chahiye, jisne ye naalayaki ki hai".. He also narreted a few of his recent nazms.

The latest work of gulzar saab titled "Kusumagraj ki Suni Chuni Kavitaayen", featuring translations of poems of noted Marathi poet Kusumagraj was released recently. The collection is released in both Urdu and Devnagrui script. Urdu book has been published by Sahitya Akadami while the book in hindi script is published by Vaani Prakashan.

The Eighth Vishwa Hindi Sammelan concluded in New York yesterday. Gulzar saab chaired a lively session on "The Role of Bollywood in Promoting Hindi'. Speaking on the occasion, Gulzar saab told "Cinema is the Timekeeper of the Language, and records how a language is spoken from time to time. A film reflects the language spoken by the common man of that specific period of time, contrary to the thinking that Cinema corrupts the language". He also reiterated that Urdu should be used with Hindi in Cinema as both complements each other and gells well. "Bollywood mein Hindi", a specially commissioned documentary on the role played by Bollywood in promoting Hindi in the world, was also screened at the conference. Over 1,000 delegates from India, the US and other countries attended the three-day conference organised by the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the US branch of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

It was a historic moment when Gulzar saab today paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1857 revolt on the occassion of 150th anniversary of the revolution that started the journey to independence. Presenting a nazm on 1857 at the central hall of Parliament to a gathering of  hon'ble President, Vice Precident, PM, top leaders and dignitaries, gulzar saab conveyed the importance of the sparks (chingari) of 1857 which eventually lead to the independence later thru the nazm "1857".

A treat for the ears and soul. A tribute to Amrita Pritam in the form of an album 'Amrita recited by Gulzar'. Gulzar saab's tribute in the form of narration in the rich timbre, brilliant script and sensitive rendering of poems is certainly one the best paid tributes to the poetess..The recitation and narrations is well assisted by Bhupinder ji who fills the gap with soothing use of strings (at some places he takes us back to "Wo Jo shayar Tha")  and adequate music.

This year's Bahurupi Pu La Sanman was conferred upon Gulzar saab at the inaugural ceremony of the fourth Pulotsav at Pune on January 19, 2007. The award ceremony was followed by the screening of documentaries and films by Gulzar on January 20 at NFAI. Honoured with a Puneri Pagadi, Gulzar saab praised Pune for remaining "Culturally Alive" and vibrant.

Raavi Paar now translated in Gujarati

The Gujarati version of Raavi Paar was released in Mumbai by Gulzar saab. Raavi Paar is translated in Gujarati by Ms. Preeti D. Kothi. A grand musical night of Gulzar's songs was held on the occasion.

The book is also available in hindi, english, urdu, punjabi, marathi and bangla languages.

Manzarnaama

A new series of books has been compiled by Radhakrishna Prakashan featuring the scripts of gulzar saab's films. The series is titled "Manzarnaamaa' and five manzarnaamaa's are already been published and available in the series. They are 'Libaas', 'Hututu', 'Meera', 'Aandhi' and 'Khushboo' .. A big plus in 'Meera' is an interesting interview of gulzar saab by yashwant vyas.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Gulzar saab

Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan has honoured Gulzar saab with The Life Time Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in Indian Poetry and Music. The award will be given to him in New York on the 24th April, 2006. A short documentary of 18 minutes made by Meghna gulzar on Gulzar saab's life will also be featured at the function.

Chal dilli chalein : Song for the Commonwealth Games

Gulzar saab has penned the theme song "Chal Dilli Chalein" for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted in New Delhi. A galaxy of stars were present at the recently concluded Melbourne Commonwealth games to perform at the closing ceremony to showcase India's diverse culture, magnificent landscape and rich heritage in a cultural presentation. Sonu Nigam, Shreya ghoshal, Shamak Davar and Sunidhi Chauhan performed live on Gulzar saab's theme song composed by shankar-Ehsan-Loy.

Gulzar saab has won the award for the best lyricist of 2005 in all the major award functions. Naam ada likhna won at Screen while Kajaraare won at the Filmfare and Zee.

Pinnocchio by Gulzar

Pinnocchio is musical drama scripted by gulzar saab was recently staged at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi. The fairytale musical presentation featured hundreds of children creating the adventures of pinnocchio in dance-theatre form on stage. Gulzar saab has done the script, lyrics and narration, and Ustad Zakir Hussain and brother Taufiq Qureshi have composed the music. Vasmati Misra, famous kathak dancer and daughter-in-law of Birju Maharaj conceptualized this production and after a successful showindelhi, her group Dhwani will take this presentation to various cities in the country. An audio album featuring the songs of gulzar and his narration of the story is expected soon.

Mera Kuchh Samaan : Anthology on Saregama HMV

An exclusive 4 Disc CD Rom Set of Gulzar saab's best film and non film songs have been released on Saregama HMV titled as Mera Kuchh Samaan. The Set features some of the finest and popular works of gulzar saab with 3 discs dedicated to film songs while of the the discs features his non film songs. The beautifully packaged Set was released on 5th September by Jaya Bachchan at Mumbai. The package also contains a beautiful booklet featuring a write up by Subhash K. Jha, some old photographs and also features details on some of his popular works.

"When HMV expressed a desire to do a compilation of my songs for my birthday I was skeptical. 'Not another anthology. Hasn't the public had enough of my compilations already?' But they were adamant.

Gulzar saab's famous collection of poetry "Kuchh aur nazmein" which was published first time 25 years ago has now been published again. The second edition of "Kuchh aur nazmein" was recently released by Radhakrishna Prakashan first time after 1980. Gulzar saab. The collection features gulzar saab's nazms penned betwwen 1965 and 1979. Gulzar saab preface me likhte hain..

AGNEE KI UDAAN (WINGS OF FIRE) : Audiobook on Honorable President Abdul Kalaam's Autobiography

The hindi and urdu version of the audio book of Honorable President Abdul Kalaam's auto-biography titled Agni Ki Udaan was recently released on SKY Music (more popularly known as Karaditales Music). The complete audiobook is translated and narrated by Gulzar saab. The audiobook features narration of the autobiography by Gulzar saab with background music by Three Brothers and a Voilin (remember Bandar-Bindaas-Bandar?). A few devotional tracks in the voices of Shankar Mahadevan and Bombay Jayashree are also included within the narration. Watch out for more details soon.

Gulzar saab's many books available in BRAIL script

Gulzar's saab books are now available in Brail. This has been made possible with the efforts of Bhopal's organisation "AARUSHI". Many of the children books are available in Brail as well the popular poetry collection "Pukhraj"

MIRZA GHALIB - A BIOGRAPHICAL SCENARIO

Gulzar saab has recently completed his new book, a tribute to Mirza Ghalib titled "Mirza Ghalib - A Biographical Scenario". The book features the life and times of the legendary poet from eighteenth century in an unusual manner. The sketches are drawn straight from the works of ghalib. The scenes and stories are created from ghalib's poetry couplets and nazms. Rather than telling the historical story of his times, gulzar saab's narrative is woven around ghalib's couplets and the scenarios are created to explain why and how ghalib had written his magical couplets, ghazals and nazms. On the release of the book gulzar saab described ghalib as one of the greatest poets ever lived.

After Munshi Premchand, its time for RabindraNath Tagore

As gulzar saab's latest TV Series on Munshi Premchand is having a Re-run on popular demand, gulzar saab has started working on his next TV series for Doordarshan on the works of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

"I am reading my favourite Tagore stories all over again in order to select a few of them for adaptation for television," says Gulzar.

"That is the greatest joy of making a serial on these stories - it gives me an opportunity to revisit the treasure trove that is Tagore."

Tehreer... Munshi Premchand ki

Gulzar's tele serial "Tehreer" based on the works of Munshi Premchand is on repeat run these days on Doordarshan's National Channel. The serial hasl featured two of the novels "Godaan" and "Nirmala" as full length feature films while other stories are featured as a single episode each. The prominent stories include Poos Ki Raat, Eidgaah, Namak Ka Daroga, Kafan, Jyoti, Boodhi Kaaki and Thakur Ka Kuaan. Pankaj Kapoor and Surekha Sikri stars in Godaan while other stories features Raghuveer Yadav, Vaishali Samant, Ravi Jhankal, Savita Bajaj and other prominent theator artists. Godaan is shot as a five hour film and in first run was featured in two parts of two and half hours each but now in re run its been featured as half an hour episodic serial.

NATIONAL HONOUR PADMABHUSHAN FOR GULZAR SAAB

President APJ Abdul Kalam presented the national honour PADMABHUSHAN to Gulzar saab at an official ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 30th June, 2004.

Mirza Ghalib on DVD

Gulzar's tele serial on Mirza Ghalib is now being released on DVD. Mirza Ghalib stars Naseeruddin Shah in title role with Amzad Khan, Tanvi Azmi, Sudhir Dalvi, Neena Gupta, Rajendra Gupta and Shfi Inaamdar in prominent roles. The serial is one of the finest documents of the life and times of Mirza Ghalib. Saregama HMV is expected to release the DVDs by May-June this year. Watch out for it.

Because He Is.. an absorbing biographical sketch of Gulzar written by daughter Meghna was recently released on Rupa books. The book profiles life of Gulzar thru narratives, poetry, real life incidents and some fantastic rare photographs from gulzar's personal collection. . Kharaashein now in the form of a book

Kharaashein, The famous play of Salim Arif woven around the stories and poerty of Gulzar is now available in the form of a book. The book is recently released by Radhakrishna Prakashan Delhi. The book not only features the script of the play but also provides some photographs during its shows and cast credits. Kharaashein was first staged in July 2002 in Mumbai. Since then it has been staged in various parts of India and received critical acclaim from all over.

Kharaashein

Kharaashein, a collage of Gulzar's literary creations, based on communal strife is on the floorboards. Kharaashein was premiered in July and was later played in many Theator festivals in Mumbai in September and November 2003 [including National theator Festival and Prithvi festival]...

Kharaashein includes Hilsa, a story about middle-class attitude to riots which focusses on a Bengali family. Forced to stay at home because of the violence, it becomes a day to celebrate with hilsa fish instead.

Khauff from Gulzar's books Raavi Par is a monologue about fear and its impact on the psyche of a normal person in anxiety. The third story Khuda Hafiz is a dramatisation of Samaresh Basu's Adab with Gulzar exploring the
relationships which evolve under the duress of a riot-afflicted situation.

The cast consists of Atul Kulkarni, Kishore Kadam, Vaishali Thakkar, Ganesh Yadav, Yashpal Sharma, Lubna Salim and Anoop Soni.

These stories are enacted with Tina Bopiah's paintings on the riots in the backdrop. Director Salim Arif and executive producer Manhar Gadhia want to make people aware that these things affect all of us and not just other people.

Awaaz mein lipati Khamoshi - A book on a letter to Gulzar

Recently a book was released in Lahore, Pakistan titled "Awaaz mein liptee khamoshi". The whole book is one long letter of 142 Pages, written to Gulzar by Mr. Gulsher Butt of Lahore. The book is a unique effort as Mr. Gulsher Butt has covered Gulzar Sahab's stories, songs, poems, Ghazaliyaat and information available on the internet and the interesting fact is the Mr. Gulsher Butt has never met Gulzar Saab in person or even heard Gulzar saab's voice. The book starts with the verse from gulzar saab:
