Ha Ha I would have done the same thing,
ate less spoke more :) |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
Salaam Gulzar saab |
| Madhav Mumbai |
So....should we start our questions? |
| Vinay |
Sir, namaskaar! The delay made us (at
home people) do exactly the opposite - speak less and eat more.. |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Hello Gulzarji..This is Kaustubh from Dubai....Its
a great pleasure talking with a wonderful and great personality like you...you
are one of the two of my most favourite lyricists..other being Majrooh
Sahab :) First of all let me congratulate you on the Life Time Achievement
Award of filmfare this year.. |
| Gulzar |
Kaustubh->Thanks for this life time
compliment... I have both.. The life and a lot of time... |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Yes the TIME to churn out lots of more
gems for your fans like us :) |
| Gulzar |
Its nice chatting with you all... More
reactions than questions... Make me feel comfortable |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Your lyrics make us more than COMFORTABLE
Gulzar Sahab :) |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
I would request mr Gulzar to tell us how and when
the evergreen song tere bina zindagee was recorded and what u felt about
the song when u heard it first time. |
| Gulzar |
Zaidi->My first hearing of the melody
was in Bengali... Pancham was composing music for puja numbers.. I liked
the tune.. and thought of baptising it in Hindi.. Thanks.. RD Agreed..
|
| Madhav Mumbai |
Dear Gulzarsaab, Aap ne itne music
directors ke saath kaam kiyaa hain. Lekin the Pancham-Gulzar magic was
something else. Now, my question is- What, according to you, did you find
in Panchamda, which was so distinctly different from other music directors,
which created that magic? I mean strictly as a music composer, barring
the fact that you had such excellent friendship! |
| Gulzar |
Madhav->I think the understanding and sharing
of the script, that was to be transferred to a film.. we shared a lot
roots to do that sort of creativity... The composition was never imposed
on a situation... the situations sprouted the melody.. |
| Vinay |
Well, nothing to take away from Kishore fans (I
am also one), you promised to come up with "Gulzar remember Pancham
part 2 first." How did we miss that? And is it coming? |
| Jehangir Karachi |
After R.D.Burman and now Kishore Kumar
which would be the third one? |
| Gulzar |
Jehangir->There are two due on me... One is
Pancham part 2 and the other my humble sharing with a stalwart like Salil
Choudhary |
| Vinay |
Sir, can we have your reactions on
"the meet" (with probably a different kind of fan group than
you would normally get) and a little glimpse of what our colleagues out
there talked (you can skip the eating part if you wish :)). |
| Gulzar |
Vinay-> This group is much more focussed in
its views.. they do not let the sight of RD escape with my shadow behind
him |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Hello Gulzarji...What are your feelings
about Kishore Kumar ( KK as a person and an all rounder personality of
Hindi Cinema )...How and where did you first meet him ? You have written
around Any particular incident which you have to tell about him which
the world does not know ? |
| Gulzar |
Kaustubh-> I would sugget to go through the
book by Nerurkar. Another suggestion.. dont borrow it.. buy it... |
| Madhav Mumbai |
Dear Gulzarsaab, what are your thoughts
on today's so-called "Item Songs"? Does it hurt? |
| Gulzar |
Madhav->The formula has changed.. if it hits
you... its a hit... |
| rsinha NJ |
Gulzarji, Aap Sampooran Singhji se
"Gulzar" Kaise aur kab bane? |
| Gulzar |
rsinha-> Shayari likh ke |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Does a lyricist have any expectations
from the singer that he should sing in this way, he should have his pronounciation
( of Urdu for example ) in this manner...etc...and Kishore Kumar sahab
kitne khare utarte the is kasauti pe ? |
| Gulzar |
Kaustubh->Ofcourse, it is a part of the responsibility
to be present at the recording and check the diction of singer.. Kishore
ofcourse knew Hindi very well and would pronounce words in correct diction..
the rendering remains with the tune. |
| Vinay |
Coming to my favourite "Gulzar-side",
there hasn't been much from you for children recently. Are you by any
chance working on something for "us" :)? |
| one .. |
Gulzarsahib.. some say that life is
a random walk of opportunities and setbacks.. In other words one can never
be sure of the destination. What has been your experience? |
| Gulzar |
one-> I'll let you when I reach the destination,
I am on way |
| AJ Noida |
sir, which film song do you consider
to be your best lyrics? |
| Gulzar |
AJ->There are different favourites from different
point of view.. but Phir se aaiyo badra.. and mera kuchh saamaan Move
me every time |
| Amit Calcutta |
Gulzar saab, recently you worked a
lot with Anu Malik which in my opinion was not the best thing to do (sorry
to any AM fans present here). On one chance he also went ahead to claim
that according to YOU he reminded you of R. D. Burman - that you made
him sit in the place that you have kept reserved in your room for Panchamda.
Speaking for myself as a die-hard fan of Panchamda and ofcourse you, this
came as a real rude shock. My question is was there any amount of truth
in this claim of his? |
| Gulzar |
Amit-> You pass many a milestones in your passage..
there are eight farlongs in one mile.. you and I know where was the destination..
|
| Shankar Present during the chat |
What is your opinion about Rafi saheb? |
| Gulzar |
Shankar -> Rafi saheb was a complete playback
singer.. He could sing for Johny Walker and for Dilip saheb and accordingly
changes rendering |
| Madhav Mumbai |
Dear Gulzarsaab, I can see you have
too many questions to answer...Lol! But I will just repeat my question,
in case it slips down the scroll bar: Your films had different music directors
like Madan Mohanji, Salilda, Pt.Ravishankarji, and of course, Panchamda.
Was this choice dependent on the producers? And if you had a say in it,
how did you decide who would do justice to the songs? Because, irrespective
of the fact as to who did the music....your films always had the most
melodious music scores. What was the criteria in selecting the MD? |
| Gulzar |
Madhav-> In my own films I had two anchors that
I looked for.. One Sanjeev Kumar.. the other RD Burman.. Other than this
was always negotiable because of the producers choice |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Gulzarji..How about some of your lyrics
written in 70's & 80's, meant for certain films/Music Directors and
then they are not released ? What happens to them ?? |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
What aout your association with Hemant Kumar ?
Apart from Pancham that you just explained you seem to have had a special
tuning there. |
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzarji - Namaste - Good Evening -
Can you tell us more on your association with NC Sippy and Hrishikesh
Mukerjee - the Uttam and Rupam Chitra banners? You produced some quality
work as a director, in writing lyrics, script, dialogues. |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit and Shashi-> You have a long life..
we were just talking about the team of these three stalwarts.. Hrishida,
Hemantda and NC Sippy, from where I started my career with Ashirwad [as
a writer] and later as a director.. Hemant da was the first one to call
me for writng after Bimalda's demise.. NC Sippy gave me the break as the
director.. and Hrishida gave me films like Ashirwaad, Anand, Guddi, Bawarchi
and many more which put me on the scene as a writer |
| rsinha NJ |
Gulzarji, Panchamda ke jo do hazaar
se bhi zyaada dhune unke music bank mein hai, (aur jo sunnewalo tak pahuchi
nahi hai) kya un dhoono ko aapke bolon ke saath ab bhi suna nahi ja sakta
kissi tarah? Woh dhuune kiss ke paas hai ab? |
| Gulzar |
RSinha->I am not aware of Pancham's bank account...
but I know he was very rich with the music.. I know some part of his bengali
compositions I wish I had a chance to write Hindi songs of that |
| Jehangir Karachi |
lagta haiy aaj Postman ka din nahin,
itne sawaal uthaiye par koi jawaab nahin |
| Gulzar |
Jahangir-> Afsos hai Hum La-Jawaab hain... |
| AJ Noida |
thanks for the answer regarding your
favourite lyrics! which current music directors and singers do you see
sharing the same spot light with the masters of the yesteryears, the golden
period of hindi film music? |
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzar-ji - according to Nerurkar's
book - you and Pancham had created one song for an unfinished Prasan Kapoor
(Jeetendra's) movie. Was this movie in the same genre as Khusboo, Kinara,
Parichay ? |
| Gulzar |
Shashi-> Originally It was written for an other
Story, which was named khushboo, finally the title remained, the story
and the song changed.. The song should still be lying with Prasanna Kapoor.
The song was sung by Kishore Kumar |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Just curious...How was your relation
( your way of communication, your feelings about him ) with Majrooh Sahab
?? |
| Gulzar |
[Pavan] Please wait for 5 minutes before
any other questions.. for old question logs... |
| anoop Princeton , NJ |
Gulzar Sahib ! Since you already have
so many questions to answer, I won't shoot another one. This is just my
humble opinion/comment . I believe 50-100 years from now if 'there is
one thing to be picked' from all your work to be remmbered , it will be
'Mirza Ghalib'. You would have made a place in the history just by making
'Mirza Ghalib' |
| Jehangir Karachi |
Gulzarji have you ever thought about
making a serial on various other great poets like Ghalib |
| Gulzar |
Jahangir -> "Mir" remains a desire...
Hazaaron khwahishen aisee ki har khwahish pe dum nikle.. |
| Jehangir Karachi |
It is widely known that launching Tabu
since Maachis she has been accepted as the future shabana azmi, which
male artist do you think can be considered heading towards same path |
| Gulzar |
Jehangir -> Tabu is not heading to adopt any
other personality but herself.. in her own range she has many of the horizons
beyond... |
| Madhav Mumbai |
As for Sanjeev Kumar, he was without
doubt a fantastic actor...but you even showed the world the ACTOR hidden
inside the star Jeetendra. What prompted you to cast him the very first
time? |
| Gulzar |
Madhav-> Two good reasons, one he was my neighbour
and second he was capable, which I proved |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
Gulzar saab considering you had already
worked in Do duni Chaar What inspired you to make Angoor ? You have made
a mention of its songs in Achaanak |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit-> I do not remember any reference to
Angoor and Do dooni chaar in Achanak... Do dooni chaar was not made exactly
as was written for some handicaps.. so I intended to remake it when I
became a director |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
In Achaanak Vinod Khanna tells a fellow officer
his wife has sent taped songs of Do Dooni Chaar whilst on parade and is
punished by Iftekhar |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit-> Sorry, the age takes its toll.. May
be you are right.. |
| Madhav Mumbai |
Dear Gulzarsaab, how is the poet Gulzarji
different from the director Gulzarsaab....do you percieve both the art
forms differently? |
| Kaustubh Dubai |
Hello again...What do you think about
AMIT KUMAR - why is he not so successful as his father ?? Are you giving
him a "BREAK" in your forthcomming films ?? ( Since you have
seen his career right through )PLEASE........ I NEED THIS TO KNOW VERY
MUCH |
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzar-ji - Thank you very much - Not
to mention we are grateful to this same team for giving us gems like Koshish,
Achaanak, Sadma, Khubsoorat - such a bouquet of varied themes, excellant
acting and rich scripts. I was almost hopeful of such a team would be
formed again with Mr. Pandit or Time Audio.... |
| Gulzar |
Shashi-> Mr RV Pandit was ofcourse very knowledgable
producer for me.. but he has other priorities for his social works.. [Fortunate
fot the society, unfortunate for me] |
| Shireesh Shanghai |
Gulzarji - Lyrics aur melody pe kai
baar kai logon se suna ki kabhi lyrics pehle likhe jaate hain aur kabhi
tune pehle compose hoti hai. Par ek sawaal interludes ke baare mein. Interludes
ki variations aur duration kaise decide hoti hai? Aapki filmon mein, kis
hadh tak aap music director ko khaas instructions detey thhey interludes
ke liye? |
| Gulzar |
Shireesh-> Generally, the director's have an
estimate or the duration, considering the total length which they require..
I personally left it on the composer because I enjoy picturising the music
parts.. [even interludes] |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Mora Gora Ang Le Leyee.Did you saw
any goree goree girl that u wrote ur first song. |
| Gulzar |
Zaidi -> I was looking for one with Shyam [Saanwale]
rang.. |
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzar-ji - I have alway admired your
song picturisation - a perfect balance between simple, natural emoting
(the old classical style) and yet entertaining. But you broke all boundaries
with the picturisation of "Katra Katra". Was it the song or
the situation that led to the dreamy shot compositions. Did Pancham (or
Madan Mohan-ji, Hemant-da) ever accompany you to the song/shoot location? |
| Gulzar |
Shashi-> No. they didn't accompany for picturisation..
they did visit the locations even while song picturisation [Pancham specifically]...
|
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Gulzar Sahib I request you to plz visit Pakistan
and be my Guest. |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Aap Pakistan Kyon nahin aate.We love
u very much.Kaash aap mere guest banen phir main aap kee poetry gungunaon
ke AAJ SARHAD PAAR SE KUUCH MEHMAN AAYE THE. |
| Gulzar |
Zaidi-> Hazir hounga, Insha Allah! |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Thanks Gulzar Sahib.I will not die
unless you are here. Its a commitment not a promise. |
| Madhav Mumbai |
One last question, Gulzarsaab! What
would you like to be remembered as- Gulzaarsaab, the film maker, or Gulzarsaab,
the poet? Thanks for your time, and of course....for all those beautiful
lyrics and films that you have given us! |
| Gulzar |
Madhav-> Dont ask the difficult questions...
I am father, a son, a husband, a brother, and want to be remembered with
all the relationships.. |
| raghu minneapolis |
Can you tell us when we can expect
to see LIBAAS see the light of day....also how many reels of DEVDAS did
you shoot before it was shelved and if it is ever possible to see the
rushes of the same....thanks.... |
| Gulzar |
Raghu-> Two and half reels of Devdaas with two
songs recorded, and libaas, ofcourse enquire from the laundry |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Dil Padosi Hai.Sir what was the reason
that there was no song for Kishore in that album. |
| Gulzar |
Zaidi->Wo album ghar walon ke liye thi Padosi
ke liye nahin |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
One of your most interesting characters
was the role played by Anuradha Patel,in Ijaazat. Was she your first choice
? Was the charcter inspired by Isadora Duncan? |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit-> Not the character, but the death accident
was taken from Isadora's real life... |
| Amit Bathinda |
Namaste gulzar sahaib |
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzar-ji - After making many delightful
and meaningful movies with the NC Sippy banners, what was the reason for
the teaming with Pancham and Dadoo Sippy for JEEVA - a more commercial
venture. Was this the last meeting of the old brigade? Since neither Pancham
nor you worked for the banner again. (Chal Aaj Ke Din remains the only
unliked song for me, in your teaming with Pancham) |
| Gulzar |
Shashi-> NC Sippy was a man of great
convictions... I was proud of making my films with him... Pancham and
Daddoo both were part of my team, Pancham as MD and Daddo as Assistant..
|
| Shashi Rao Eagan |
Gulzar-ji - Can you tell us your vision
for DEVDAS - was this venture comparable with MEERA in terms of research
and realism? (Wouldn't Sanjeev Kumar have made a better choice for depicting
the tragedy/pathos?) |
| Gulzar |
Shashi-> Unfortunately I dont agree with you..
I was very close to the book.. the charm of SaratChandra's Devdaas is
the adolescence of the Devdaas, who never grew out of it... While the
two women matured... Dharmendra was certainely a better adolescent romantic
lover, which he still retains.. |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
Corolarry to Shashi's question. Would
you have considered Dharmendra for Sanjeev's role in Namkeen ? |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit->We'll set an enquiry commission...
|
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
My apologies |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit-> I hope you didn't mind it... Humor
is an essential ventilation for healthy living |
| puneet jaipur |
namaste sir i want to ask a question about a song
from the film biwi aur makaan " aa tha jab janam liya tha e hoke
mar gaye" what inspire you to write such a funny song |
| Gulzar |
Puneet->Vishwajeet. while shooting
I could not recognize him when I entered the sets.. it was only after
hearing his voice, I placed him... Ee tha jab dekha tha... aa tha jab
pehchana |
| Madhav Mumbai |
Just wanted you to know before I sign
off....I have a ten month old kid(named Rahul after my favourite music
director) who does not stop when he starts crying. But just sing "Lakdi
ki kaathi" and he forgets his tears and starts clapping his hands.
Here is a "thank you" kissie from him to Gulzarnana. Mmmmuahhh!
Lol! |
| Gulzar |
Madhav-> He has inherited music with the name..
play Papadwale panga na le to him... |
| Vinay |
ha ha.. That reminds me.. We never came to hear
the full version of "aapa ki aapa.Di paanii me.n jaa pa.Dii".
|
| Gulzar |
Vinay-> Aapa ki aapadi, Paani mein jaa padi
aapa ko dhoop mein sukhao, aapa ko istari karaao... |
| Vinay |
yahaa.N tak to suni hai, sir. par istarii ke baad
kyaa :). ye to puure gaane ke laayk "thought" hai. |
| Vinay |
You have aready mentioned about your
special fondness for Ghalib and Mir. Among your contemporaries poets (read
shaayars), who are the ones you like to read? You mentioned at a place
about Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi as well. Anyone else? |
| Gulzar |
Vinay->yes.. Dr. Basheer Badr, Faraaz, Marin
Sorescu[the spanish poet] are few of my favourite poets.. |
| raghu minneapolis |
Did you write roles with actors in
mind or tried to fit actors into the roles you wrote...sometimes your
casting seemed so perfect (aided ofcourse by Sanjeev Kumar's acting many
a time)? And to add to that it is surprising you never worked with Amitabh
though Hrishida for whom you wrote several times did....any comments on
projects planned that never perhaps materialised? |
| Gulzar |
Raghu-> I do the casting always after completing
the script.. Somehow Sanjeev had that capability of fitting into any role...
|
| |
Gulzar-ji - Are you currently planning
on directing any movie? Any ideas/stories? |
| Jehangir Karachi |
when should we expect a film from you? |
| Gulzar |
Hopefully I'll do a film next year...
|
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
How different it was working with SD
Burman from RDB |
| Gulzar |
Dikshit->SD Burman was to take a start and RD
to carry on... |
| kunal jaipur |
how is your experience with ar rahman
and vishal bhardwaj |
| Gulzar |
Kunal-> Very Musical |
| Vinay |
behad shukriya, sir. itanaa waqt saath
gujaarane ke liye. Hope you will keep giving us these good times more
often. |
| Gulzar |
[Pavan] What is your thoughts about
internet as a medium of communication... |
| Gulzar |
Pavan-> I feel richer, with this
chat and this medium, which makes it possible which I could never had
done thru letters, but its more complete by reading faces personally..
you need a touch for the relation... |
| Shashi |
Gulzar-ji - since we are out of time
- let me thank you for your insights into your associations, movies and
its music. I will cherish this chat for years to come. Here's wishing
you great health, long life and boundless creativity - we look forward
to many movies and literary creations from you. Shashi |
| Gulzar |
Phoolon ki tarah lab kholo sabhi....

and reading your replies. Bahut shukriya, aasha hei aisa mauka dubaara
mile..:) |
| Shashi |
Dikshit - no...not phir milenge....but as Pancham
would say...'Milte Hain!' --- |
| rsinha NJ |
Pawan, could you please arrange for the transcript
to be posted on the website? Thank you for this session. Shukran Gulzarji.
:) |
| Madhav Mumbai |
Well, then, Gulzarsaab.....here's wishing you all
that you want! And praying for the wellbeing of all your near and dear
ones....Thanks for a lovely evening....Good night, sir! |
| Zaidi Rawalpindi |
Thank You Pavan for this wonderful session. The
name of this chat should be MAGIC MOMENTS spent with Gulzar Sahib. |
| Shashi |
For some reason - I have lost my name/id in this chat - reminds me - Naam Gum Jaayega...Chehra Yeh Badal Jaayega...Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchan Hai...Gar Yaad Rahe.....Wow...wonderful - thank you, the pleasure was all ours. (And thanks so much Pavan for arranging this chat) |
| DIKSHIT ARYA CALCUTTA |
Good bye every one |
| Vinay |
Thanks very much indeed to Pavan for
a great effort to organise the chat. Dixit, Shashi - had a great time.
See you later - "milte hai.n". :) |
