Born
in Deena(Now in Pakistan) on 18th August, 1934. After partition he came
to Delhi. Gulzar began his film career as an assistant
to Bimal Roy. He also worked with Hrishikesh Mukherjee in the beginning
of his career. He started writing songs for films with Bimal da's Bandini.
Mora Gora Ang Layee Le is supposed to be his first song. Although His first
film to be released was Kabuli Wala, which also had some all time
greats like Ganga aaye kahan se. Bandini and Kabuliwala were
followed by Sannata, Biwi aur Makan, Do Dooni Chaar
and most notable of all Khamoshi and various others during 60's.
After getting recognition as a sensitive lyricist, he started writing scripts and stories for films. Then with Mere Apne in 1971, He turned Director. Since then he has given us lots of beautiful, serious and funny moments through his movies. He has written stories for around 60 films and directed 17 movies, each one a masterpiece.
During 1987-1996 he went away from the seen as he did only 7 films as lyricist and 2 as director in the span of 10 years. During this period he did one of the most outstanding jobs for the small screen, the serial called Mirza Ghalib, a tribute to the legendary poet. Mirza Ghalib will remain one of the most memorable TV productions for its music, direction, dialouges and portrayel of MG by Naseeruddin Shah. 1996 saw Gulzar back in action, behind the camera for the making of Maachis, a candor document on terrorism in Punjab. The success of Maachis, got Gulzar back to the film industry. After Maachis, he teamed up with new breed of music directors like AR Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The magic of Dil Se's music won him yet another Filmfare award. His recent venture HU TU TU received critical acclaim. Gulzar is back with his pen, in 2006 he has received best lyricist award at almost every major award function. and now writing lyrics for Dumkata, YuvRaj, ShoeBite, Manirathnam's Next with AR Rahman and a film with maestro Illaiyaraja with a couple of untitled films. He has recently did a tele serial on Munshi Premchand's works titled Tehrir... Munshi Premchand ki, which was on air recently..
Although films gave him a mass recognition, Poetry always remained his first love. His first poetry collection Ek Boond Chaand was published in 1962. Roopa - Harper Collins has recently published his new poetry book Triveni. A collection of Gulzar poems titled "Raat, Chaand aur Mein" was also released recently, covering poems related to only Raat and Chaand.Another peotry collection Raat Pashmine ki has recently been published in Pakistan. The Indian version of Raat Pashmine Ki is released later on Roopa-Harper. Mera Kuchh Samaan and Chhaiyya Chhaiyya are the two song collections of gulzar.
Rajkamal Prakashan is presently compiling the script of gulzar saab's films in the form of a book. The series is titled "Manjarnaama" Till daate five manjarnaamas are out including Libaas, Hututu, Aandhi, Khushbu and Meera. A few more manjarnaamas would be available in coming time.
Last few years are the years of experimentation, where many young artists from different faculties worked with Gulzar and provided new expressions to his work. Some of the notable experiments include Kharaashein - a play by Salim Arif on Gulzar's short stories, Udaas Paani - an experimental music album by Abhishek Ray and, Gulzar's Poetry on Canvas by a young Painter Ajay Kumar Samir. Kharaashein has now been published in the form of a book on Radhakrishna Prakashan. Meghna Gulzar has recently come up with a biographical sketch of Gulzar saab in the form of a book titled "Because He Is...". Recently he penned the theme song "Lau se lau jalti rahe" for Olympic Torch Relay event at New Delhi and "Chal dilli chalein chalna hai" for Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in 2010.
Gulzar has won 5 National Awards and 19 Filmfare Trophies. For details check Katra-Katra Section on this site. He has been awarded the SAHITYA AKADEMY AWARD in 2003 for his collection of short stories "Dhuaan". FILMFARE has honoured him with a LifeTime Achievement Award for his contribution
to Hindi Cinema in 2002.
Government of India has conferred Gulzar saab with the National Honour of PADMABHUSHAN.
Gulzar saab has WON the Oscar for Best Song with Music Director AR Rahman for the song Jai Ho! (Slumdog Millionaire).... Jai Ho!
After Oscars Gulzar saab has now won the Grammy award with AR Rahman for Jai Ho (Best Song Written for a film). Jai Ho!

Superb news for kids of all ages. As Gulzar saab has recently become GrandFather (of Samay, Bosky's Son), he has celebrated the event with all the kids in the form of an audio book titled "Bosky Ka Panchatantra". The series was penned by Gulzar saab when his daughter Bosky was a kid, and now he has converted all those books in the form of Audio book. The audio book is a set of two CD's featuring 13 stories penned and narrated by Gulzar saab. The album is released by Times Music. Check out more on Bosky Ka Panchatantra from the Archives.

The music of much anticipated film of the year Raavan, was released on April 24. Raavan soundtrack is yet another coming together of Rahman-Gulzar and Mani Rathnam, the team which has fantastic track record over the years and rarely fails to meet the expectations. Raavan soundtrack features seven tracks penned by Gulzar saab and composed by Rahman, which may take some time to grow on the listener but slowly captivates the listeners in the web of endless loop of listening. T-Series has released the audio of the film. The film featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Vikram in lead cast is expected to be released in mid June.

Gulzar saab was recently on a ten day tour of Europe. On April 11, 2010 he presented a Bhagat Singh memorial lecture at Glasgow organised by Punjabi Sahit Sabha, Glasgow. will post some pictures and report soon.
Essay communication, Mumbai is celebrating gulzar works in a four day long theatre festival 'Srijanotsava' at Goa from May 5 to May 8, 2010. The festival will feature three plays, Athanniyaan (May 5), Lakeerein (May 6) and Kharaashein (May 7) all based on the writings of Gulzar saab and directed by Salim Arif and the fourth day will feature Gulzar saab in an interactive poetry session with the audience.

It was an evening to rememeber for long. Two authors seperated by political and geographical borders came together and made those borders invisible and insignificant in thew world of literature. Part of Aman Ki Asha initiative, a joint reading session of Gulzar saab and Intizar Hussain (noted writer from Pakistan) came together on the stage of Bandra Fort and mesmerized the audience thru reading of their respective works consisting of short stories, memoirs and poems and ofc emotions and admiration for each other.

Essay Communication, Mumbai is showcasing works of Gulzar saab in four day long Celebrating Gulzar festival at Prithvi Theatres, Mumbai. Three plays, Kharaashein, Lakeerein and Athanniyaan all based on the writings of Gulzar saab and directed by Salim Arif will be staged during the festival and the fourth day will feature Gulzar saab in an interactive poetry session.


After a win at the Oscars, Jai Ho continues to celebrate the spirit of victory and international acclaim. Gulzar saab has WON Grammy Award (with AR Rahman and Tanvi Shah) at the 52nd Grammy awards (2010) in the best song writer award for a motion picture category.

Gulzar saab has been awarded honorary doctorate by Punjabi University, Patiala. The honour was conferred on Gulzar saab by Governer of Punjab SF Rodrigues on December 28 at convocation ceremony of the University in Patiala.

The music of Veer, the latest offering of Gulzar saab as lyricist was released on December 14, 2009 at Mumbai and now available at the music stores. This is the first time Gulzar saab has teamed up with young music director's duo Sajid-Wajid. Veer soundtrack features five songs (eight tracks) penned by Gulzar saab. The film directed by Anil Sharma features Salman Khan and new comer Zareen Khan in the main leads and will be releasing on January 22, 2009. The track lisiting is as below:

Aththanniyan, a new play based on the writings of Gulzar saab and designed and directed by Salim Arif was premiered at Prithvi Theater, Mumbai on November 3,2009 . A fusion of sounds, rhythms and images of the vibrant underbelly, the show is a vivacious collage of poems and stories about Mumbai Mahanagar written by Gulzar Saab from his experiences in the last fifty years in this city. Atthanniyaan is woven together by Salim Arif on the theme of Mumbai and life of people living on the edge in this magical metropolis. The show is the outcome of a month long workshop with newcomers done by Salim Arif which also had Yashpal Sharma, Lubna Salim and Amit Jairath guiding the youngsters.

A new book featuring 100 lyrics of Gulzar saab with translations by Indonesia based young writer Sanjoy Shekhar was released in Mumbai on October 6, 2009. The set of lyrics and translations features, 100 film and non film songs of Gulzar saab right from his first "Mora gora ang lai le" (Bandini) to recent "Jai ho" (Slumdog Millionaire). The hard bound book presents original lyrics in Devnagri and side by side Translation of each song in english and anecdotes, and is published by Penguin Books India.

Gulzar saab is on a visit to Moscow to attend Moscow International Book Fair. This year Indian Literature is a featured theme and focus of the fair and he has been invited to Moscow. A new book has been published this month (August 2009) in Lahore, Pakistan with the title The Art and Achievement of Gulzar written by Dr. Zafar Hassan. The book was released on August 18, 2009 the 75th Birthday of Gulzar saab. It has been published by Sang-e-Meel Publications, Lahore. It covers a review and assessment of the wide and varied activities of Gulzar over the last half a century. It includes his family background, an assessment of all the films he has directed, his notable interest in Urdu and Hindi literature, the television serials and documentaries which he has produced, a critical review of his poetry and prose and also refers to the attention he has accorded to the problems of children in his films and writings. The book has been beautifully produced and includes many colour pictures of Gulzar, Rakhee and Gulzars ancertral homes in Kurla and Deena near Jhelum in Pakistan. The back cover contains commentary by the famous urdu short story writer Intezar Hussain.

ACADEMY AWARDS HISTORY
This is the first Academy Award nomination for Gulzar.
Including his two other nominations this year for Original Score and Original Song for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, this is the third Academy Award nomination for A.R. Rahman.
The three day Jaipur Literature Festival 2009 opened on January 21st, 2009. The highlight of the opening day was the Juglabandi of Poetry recitation by Gulzar saab and Sh. Pawan K. Verma, who recently translated Gulzar saab's poems in english titled "Selected Poems of Gulzar". The duo presented a Jugalbandi with Gulzar saab's recitation of original poem followed by translation of the same by Sh. Verma. It was quite an entertaining session and the duo made an unforgettable performance to a packed house.. Gulzar saab was at his uusual best and Pawan K Verma matched him with a quality translation and rendition. There were more people watching them outside as the hall was closed with a house full board. Yaar Julahe, a new poetry compilation of Gulzar saab's works will be released on January 22nd, 2009 at the Crosswords, Jaipur. The book is compiled by Yateendra Mishra and published by Vani Prakashan features nazms, lyrics and ghazals by Gulzar saab. more details soon..
Aabshaar, Jaipur organised a poetry workshop on January 20, 2009 providing an opportunity to young and budding writers of reciting their nazms and ghazals to an eminent panel of Gulzar saab, Sheen Kaaf Nizam and Nand Kishore Acharya Ji. The workshop was followed by a poetry recitation session of Gulzar saab in the evening. Check out the pics. will write more shortly.
The music of Red Chillies productions forthcoming film "Billu Barber" is out and available. Gulzar saab has penned three songs composed by music director Pritam including the title track Billu Bhayankar. The film features Irfan Khan in the title role, while producer Shahrukh Khan also features in an important guest appearance. This is the first time when Gulzar saab has penned for Director Priyadarshan's film. The title song Billu Bhayankar is a fun ride while Khudaya Khair is melodius fair. The album is released on T-Series.

Lakeerein, a show on Gulzar saab's writings on Indo-Pak relationships premiered at the Prithvi Theaters, Mumbai on October 28,2008. Designed and Directed by noted director Salim Arif, the show features, a collage of Gulzar saab's poems, stories and monologues of the likes of BATWARA, PEER SAHAB, OVER and LOC, as a tribute to the resilience of human spirit and shared values nurtured over centuries of common co-existence. The leading cast include Yashpal Sharma, Lubna Salim and Kishore Kadam while popular ghazal singer Seema Sehgal will present Gulzar saab's ghazala and poems live in the show.

Noted Marathi author Vijay Padalkar's new book on Gulzar saab's Cinema titled Ganga Aaye Kahaan Se was released by Gulzar saab at Boskyana on October 18, 2008. The marathi book features critical analysis of Gulzar saab's films. Majestic Publications, Mumbai has pubished this 200 page book which is priced Rs. 250/-. Gulzar saab has penned the preface of the book. Vijay Padalkar has earlier translated Gulzar saab's Raavi Paar in Marathi.
