Gulzar - The Garden of Songs Gulzar - Photograph

Music Review - Bunty aur Babli
by Pavan Jha

Gulzarfans,

Honestly speaking, for me these days, waiting for a new film album of
gulzar saab raises more fears than excitement (except for the albums
of a few MDs). A few problematic questions arises to a gulzarfan like me, What kind of chemistry gulzar saab would be sharing with the new generations directors and MDs. Whether gulzar saab's soulful poetry and songs will get good sound or will it sound good to the dhoom dhadaka music (so called music) of these days..

BaB is a big surprise for me... I am surprised to see the way gulzar
saab's pen danced to the techno-folk compositions by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The outcome has definately surpaased my
expectations..

At this juncture let me warn you that the music of BaB is not a Classic.. or not even a match to Shaad Ali's previous film Saathiya in terms of poetry and soothing music.. but the music of BaB is a fantastic timepass.. very enjoyable.. It is more naughty and frisky in comparison to Saathiya. The SEL compositions have a heavy techno folkish feel to them.. One of the important features of the album is that the songs are tightly integrated within the script. and the audience will definately enjoy these songs in theators..

The album starts with a simple yet appealing composition "dhadak
dhadak". The song effectively features the ambitions of the two
leading characters, who hail from small cities and wanted to do big in
life.

"chhote chhote shahron se, khali bhor dupaharon se
hum to jhola uthaye chale
baarish kam kam lagti hai, nadiya maddham lagti hain
ham samandar ke andar chale"..

The film seems to be an indianized version of a recent spielberg film
"Catch me if you can" featuring hanks-decaprio team in the lead. The
title song too suggest this and it introduces the two lead characters
Bunti aur Bubli the two thugs..

"Lattu ghumaaye ke, chakkar chalaaye
loot le wo duniya ko thengaa dikhaaye ke
aisa koi sagaa nahin
jisko thagaa nahin
aisee maari langadi ki soya jagaa nahin"

The slang used by gulzar saab in the song perfactly suits to the folkish composition. an enjoyable number indeed. The english rap version of this song (by blaaze) is simply perfact for title song at the time of credits display on screen.

The best song for me in the album is "chori pe chori".. Sonu nigam's
rendering is the highlight of the song..and its pure gulzarish song in
terms of lyrics.. SEL have gien it a very soothing music to make it the best song in the album.. The song might not attract you at first listening but will definately will grow on you with every subsequent
listenings..

One of the most funny and enjoyable song of the album is "kajra-re
kajra-re" the Nautanki-Qawwaali sung by Alisha, Shankar Mahadevan and Jaaved Ali... The masala lyrics and composition will definately evoke a lot of Seetis (whistling).. Although gulzar saab has used the
similar expressions in one of his song in "Chupke se", here the song
is totally different in character. SEL have paced this composition very well. I wish director Shaad Ali will be able to match the fun on screen too..

The remaining song "Nach baliye" is not much to offer to, apart from
some good percussions by SEL. but I believe this will eventualy be the
most popular song in the album due to disco feel specially at the clubs.

In all the music of bunti aur Bubli is very bubbly and enjoyable for
the moment, filhaal I am sure the songs will definately a value addition and will make the film watching more enjoyable. Something missed by spielberg in his "catch me if you can"
