Music Review - Maqbool
by Pavan Jha
Maqbool... The name raises a lot of expectations, not only because its an interesting adaptation of Macbath in Hindi, or not only, for the cast assembled (the likes of Pankaj Kapoor, Om Puri, Naseer (once again after JBDY), Tabu, Irfaan khaan... ) or, for teaming up of Gulzar Vishal once again.... but also for Vishal's courage for taking up macbeth with a contemporary theme and look, and intention to do something good and non-compromising.. This time Vishal conducting a grand orchestra on screen for sure... A sincere film (and unusual) is coming... Atleast the music album hints so... The soundtrack is unconventional, and seems to be a part of the script... It seems Vishal the director has used Music as one of the lead characters of the film and used instrumental pieces to display and highlight emotions and tension and the intense moments in the film...
The soundtrack starts with a mood of festivity in Jhin min jhini, a fantastic composition by Vishal, the way he builds the tempo in the song and reaches to a climax, is a showcase of his talent... Another highlight of the song is rendering of Saadhana Sargama and Anuradha Sriram well blended with Ultan Sultan Khan's singing of "Aaj rang hai"(Amir Khusro's famous holi song). Although Sultan Khan doesn't sound at best but I feel no other voice would have had the same impact... As for gulzar's lyrics, I believe he is enjoying his sports with words, specially with the sounds of the words... one example is in "jaaoon na jaaoon piya ki gali range paanv pakadi gayi, jo chali" Range paanv is for "Paanv painted with Mehandi" and used as it sound the more familiar nange paanv.. (or for range haath) another good gulzarish example is "roshan roshan pairon se" (for mehandi wale pair) "Hinaa me chhupa ke jiya rakh diya hatheli pe jalta diya rakh diya roshan roshan pairon se khud hi sharmaaoon main is pag us pag dolun, jaaoon na jaaoon" You would fall in love with this song at the first listening for sure.. Simply one of the best song of the soundtrack... The next one is a sufuyana qawwali "Tu mere rubaru hai".. another gem of a track...The song grows on you with every listening... Daler Mehandi (though sounds a bit misfit), provides pretty good rendering well supported by other singers.. Rone do na is intense and captures emotions of the lead pair.. Vishal has given Rekha( his wife) a suitable composition to utilize Rekha's voice best and she did a pretty good job... Vishal has included one of her songs "Chingari" from her recent album "Ishqa Ishqa", which again gells well with the mood of the album... Rukhe rukhe naina showcases the talent of Sanjeev Abhyankar, one of the finest singers of the younger generation.... He takes on a difficult composition and handles it with ease... he is surely a genuine talent.... The best part is that the album has its roots in the script of the film... The instrumental pieces like "Shoonya" and "Nirvana" conveys this.. though it reminds us alot of Satya BGM.. Vishal hasn't compromised on the commercial factor as far as the music is concerned.... A Brave and Sincere Effort...
The Film : Vishal Bharadwaj's next directional venture Maqbool is the hindi adaptation of Williams Shakespeare's classic play 'MacBeth'. Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor, Irfaan Khaan (Playing Macbeth aka Maqbool) and Tabu (Playing Lady Macbeth) are playing the leads. Vishal has been successful in roping Naseer and OM Puri once again together. The duo are playing witches of Macbeth (as corrupt inspectors Purohit and Pandit) in the film. Although it has been adapted from Macbeth, Vishal has given it a contemporary feel of a Mumbai Underworld story rather than a costume drama... The film has already been shown in a few international film festivals. Releasing in India in Jan 04. |
