Chupke Se - A reason to Smile?

| What happens when an awaited album of Gulzar saab (read
Gulzar-Vishal) gets in your hand... It can either make your day or breaks
your heart...
"Chupke se" did both to me.. It did broke my heart at first Listening for not meeting the expectations..Some how some preoccupancies kept me away from writing a review for the album... The delay worked for me for the album.. slowly the music is growing on me with the time (as always with any of Gulzar saab's works) ... Though the magic of Gulzar-Vishal is missing, still the album provides a good listening for the time being... Vishal has disappointed me this time, first with the selection of Singers and then with some average to good tunes.. nothing significant here to match any of his past works with Gulzar saab (like maachis, satya, JTLC or even Ishqa Ishqa).. As for singers are concerned, he has picked Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Lucky Ali to sing some of the best numbers from the Album.. The problem with these singers are that they sounds same for every MD... The best song of the album is "Koi to ho jiske liye jeena ho to" sung by Udit and Alka.. though Udit has done a good job with the song but unfortunately he failed to pick the nuances of Vishal's compostion.. For me Suresh Wadkar would have done a much better job with Vishal (he was fantastic in Jahan Tum Le Chalo, Boodhe Pahado Par and all earlier works) specially in picking up the nuances of Vishal's composition.. The album starts with "Kahte kahte ruk jaati ho", a duet by Asha Bhosle and Lucky Ali... Asha does a fabulous job in this one.. She still sounds very refreshing.. Lucky Ali lends good support to her.. Lyrics wise the song is average as per Gulzar saab's standards (as most of the songs in this album).. still provides a good listening... Gulzar saab provides refreshing lyrics in "Kaafi nahin jo bhi hai - Kaafi nahin jo hai" to express the central character's ambitions and dreams. baangi dekhiye "akaash chadh kar taaro ke bheetar camp lagana hai but the song disappoints mainly due to Alka Yagnik's predictable voice and style.. Had it been given to some new singer (Mahalaxmi or Sunidhi), I hope it would have been the best song of the album, for its mood, composition and lyrics.. "Jeele Jeele - dil ke tukde seele" is an unusal number... and Ranjit Barot's rendition provides the song a different character altogether... sounds like "Kallu mama" at places.. Dildara is composed by Ranjit Barot (and lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala) and you know how much Annu Malik owes to Ranjit Barot for the sound of his hit songs.. The song falls in the category of "Mehboob mere-Fiza" category The last song "Kajraare, kajraare naina wali" will surprise
you, Daler Mehandi sounds very different from his usual "tunak tunak's".
He succeeds in providing this song a different color but only to a certain
extent... gulzar saab too tries be a bit different with expressions like
"Naina tere Chambal de lutere"
